Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) is visibly happy with the current figures on applications for the police service in 2024. Never before in the history of the executive branch have so many men and women stormed the entrance tests for future services to others. Last year, 12,000 Austrians took up the challenge. Of this record number of candidates, more than 2,600 were admitted to basic police training, including 800 in the security hotspot Vienna.

1,727 police trainees took advantage of the new climate ticket offer and 111 young officers had their driver’s license financed at taxpayer expense. This doubles safety on domestic roads.
The strongest driver on the labor market is probably the continued relaxation of tattoo rules. Tattoos ‘hidden’ under the uniform are no longer a problem for the local government, but each ‘peckerl’ is still investigated individually.
