A magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region has killed dozens of people and injured many more. Individual media reports 54 deaths.
The magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Tingri district of Shigatse city on Thursday morning. Tingri and surrounding areas “were hit by very strong tremors and many buildings near the epicenter collapsed,” Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported.

According to China’s earthquake center CENC, the magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck in the Tingri district near the border with Nepal on Tuesday morning at 9:05 a.m. (local time, 2:05 a.m. CET). The American earthquake monitoring station USGS and GeoSphere Austria gave the magnitude 7.1. Tibet is an autonomous region within China.
According to Xinhua, the tremors were clearly felt in the area. Several communities are affected. Rescue efforts are underway. In addition, residents would be evacuated to avoid possible consequences of aftershocks.
According to CCTV, there have been 29 earthquakes of magnitude three or more within a 200 kilometer radius of the current Shigatse earthquake in the past five years. However, they were all weaker than Tuesday morning’s earthquake.
Southwest China is regularly hit by earthquakes. In 2008, a devastating earthquake in Sichuan province killed nearly 70,000 people. In 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Kathmandu in neighboring Nepal killed about 9,000 people and injured thousands. It was the worst earthquake in Nepal’s history.
