Imprisonment – after traffic accidents: Tyrolean set apartment on fire

Date:

It must have been a desperate act! After two traffic accidents, a 53-year-old Tyrolean set fire to his own apartment, almost causing a tragedy. Now he was convicted at the Innsbruck Regional Court.

It could have ended much worse! After the man from Innsbruck with a blood alcohol level of 1.8 collided with a parked car in mid-February and is said to have caused a traffic accident, he probably reduced his apartment to rubble out of despair. The building had to be evacuated. But no one was injured except the fire devil himself.

“Accident not really noticed”
“I didn’t really notice the accident,” the accused tried to convince a jury of the Innsbruck Regional Court. And he didn’t start the fire intentionally, either. “I threw my coat on a table, where unfortunately there was a burning tea light,” assured the unemployed man, who officials found naked in the garden after jumping from the apartment.

However, the court did not believe the suspect and found the descriptions “unrealistic”. Because – as even police officers could hear – he announced to his mother over the phone that he was going to set himself on fire. He also sent photos of the burning table to his partner. The previously impeccable Innsbruck man was eventually sentenced to two years in prison – not legally binding.
