Bizkaia will introduce free transport for children under 12 in February

Date:

The Bizkaia Transport Consortium has also announced that the 50% discount on passes will be maintained throughout the first half of the year and from July it will be 40% on multi-trip passes and 50% for people under 26.

Bizkaia From the first week of February, free public transport applies to children under 12 years old is already in force in Álavaas agreed on Tuesday by the Bizkaia transport consortium (CTB).

The CTB has also announced that the 50% discount on passes will be maintained for the first half of the year and from July it will be 40% on multi-trip passes and 50% for people under 26.

Biscay’s institutions have indicated that free public transport will also be extended to children aged 13 and 14 in the second semester, two years longer than decided by the Basque government.

To access the free trips, minors must obtain a personalized Barik card with a guardian, who will present their ID or family book.

During today’s meeting, the CTB council also approved the new rates for 2025, which will apply from February 20, with an average increase of 3.4 percent.

The most used ticket, Creditrans, will see an average increase of 3%, which equates to an increase of 3 cents; while the Gizatrans ticket (for people over 65 and people with disabilities) will increase by 2 cents.

For its part, the meeting of the Territorial Transport Authority of Gipuzkoa (ATTG) gave permission on December 26 to maintain the 50% discounts until the end of June and to structurally expand free public transport to children under 12 years of age.

As the ATTG reports in a note, this new measure will come into effect late January or early February. To benefit from this free service, children under the age of 12 must have a card. Young Mugi are current, i.e. they do not need to obtain new cards. During the temporary validation process, the card will be shown to the driver and he will issue the free paper ticket to the minor. The systems on board buses and trains will gradually be adapted so that this tip can be automatically applied during validation, as happens in the rest of the cases.
