New details – Runaway with excavator: was divorce to blame?

Date:

A man used an excavator to cause chaos and destruction in the northeast of the German state of Baden-Württemberg (we reported). According to new findings, private problems may have been the reason.

The Public Prosecution Service confirmed to the German news agency that the divorce from his wife had taken place two to three months earlier. Since then, the man no longer lives in the shared apartment. He was shot by the police after the destruction.

The 38-year-old was the father of four children. The spokesperson could not say who announced the end of the relationship. On New Year’s Eve afternoon in the small Franconian town of Grünsfeld (Main-Tauber district), the 38-year-old rammed vehicles and buildings with an excavator and injured several police officers during a chase that lasted about an hour.

He went on the rampage at the site of a construction company in Grünsfeld where he worked and at a car dealership in nearby Tauberbischofsheim, which is owned by the owner of the construction company.

Conflicts with the employer
The spokesperson explained that there were repeated arguments between the man and his old employer. According to the Public Prosecution Service, a labor court had ordered the excavator driver to pay back wages to his former boss. The material damage caused by the excavator work was relatively high. Some of the injured police officers are still unable to serve.
