After the surprising new offensive by the Ukrainian army, heavy fighting continues. The Ukrainian General Staff reported 218 clashes in all sectors of the front in the past 24 hours. In the western Russian region of Kursk alone, 94 Russian attacks were repelled.
The armed forces were killed, it was announced on Facebook. The information cannot be independently verified. According to the American Institute for War Studies (ISW), Ukrainian troops are currently advancing in the north of the Russian city of Sudja. This could indicate a coordinated operation in the Kursk region, but also preparations for an attack on other sectors of the front.
The institute based its findings on geodata from images published on the internet. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow and military bloggers previously announced that Russian troops had repelled Ukrainian attacks.
Pushed across the border in August
Ukrainian troops crossed the border in August and have since occupied parts of the Kursk region (see video above). After months of fighting, the Russian army recaptured about half of it. Soldiers from North Korea are also deployed. Ukrainian troops launched another offensive this weekend.
Increasing territorial losses
According to reports, Russia captured almost 3,600 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory last year. The greatest losses occurred in November. There is no official confirmation of these figures. They are many times higher than in 2023. The most recent territorial gains for Russian troops are said to have taken place near Kurakhove in the east, near the city of Pokrovsk and in the disputed city of Toretsk (also both in the east).
