Since the start of the inflation wave in September 2021, prices for cheap food have increased by an average of around 53 percent. For a shopping basket that cost 51 euros at the time, you now have to pay almost 78 euros, the Chamber of Labor (AK) reported on Tuesday.
Of the forty cheapest foods and cleaning products surveyed, only liquid detergent and cucumbers were cheaper. Flour and coffee have become 88 percent more expensive since mid-2021 and penne pasta has increased by 97 percent.
Orange juice is 162 percent more expensive
However, orange juice took the top spot and rose in price by 162 percent, while tea butter rose by 85 percent. Pureed tomatoes increased 87 percent, whole milk increased 23 percent and eggs increased 38 percent.
Discounts are ten percent cheaper
“It remains expensive: in a year-on-year comparison between December 2023 and December 2024, prices for the forty cheapest food products and some cleaning products rose by an average of six percent in all stores surveyed. Supermarkets charge an average of 10.2 percent more than discounters,” the Chamber of Labor concludes.
