More than 400 people were rescued after the massive earthquake in the foothills of the Himalayas. More than 30,000 people were brought to safety. The search for survivors continues.
About 24 hours after the earthquake, those still trapped are at risk of hypothermia and dehydration. The temperature in the high altitude region dropped to minus 18 degrees Celsius last night.
The epicenter of Tuesday’s earthquake, one of the strongest in the region in recent years, was in Tingri in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. It also shook regions in neighboring Nepal, Bhutan and India.
At least 126 dead
According to Chinese authorities, at least 126 people were killed in the earthquake. So far, no deaths have been reported from Nepal or other countries.
Earthquakes are more common in southwestern China, but also in Nepal and northern India. In 2015 alone, about 9,000 people died in a magnitude 7.8 earthquake near Kathmandu.
