A bomb was found during demolition work on the partially collapsed Carola Bridge in Dresden. Specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service were called in. The World War II relic was discovered in the water of the Elbe, under the bridge.
The terrace bench was cordoned off in the area. According to the first information from the police, it was probably a bomb from the Second World War.
To demolish the prestressed concrete bridge, a construction road was dug into the river from the old town side of Dresden. The unexploded bomb was found in this area early in the morning.
Specialists must examine the bomb
Only after the explosives experts arrive can a decision be made about what happens next. If the bomb is not live, it can simply be removed, the police spokesperson explains. If the bomb is live and needs to be defused, a perimeter is usually established around the location where it was found.
Demolition work has been going on at the Carola Bridge for months. In September, a bridge collapsed unexpectedly and fell into the Elbe. The entire bridge must be demolished.
