There was great joy at the birth of the Grevy foal in October last year. Much was done to ensure its survival despite difficult starting conditions. But the little one now had to be put to sleep.
When the zebra offspring were born at the Salzburg Zoo in early October, everything looked good. But after just a few days, problems started to appear. The farmers had to provide extra feed because the 22-year-old mare had too little milk.
For a few weeks, the Grevy zebra foal was hesitant to gain weight. But in December, the young animal developed an upper respiratory infection and continued to lose weight afterward. Despite all efforts, the foal eventually stopped eating, according to zoo management.
“We really tried everything, but in the end we unfortunately had to admit defeat,” says director Sabine Grebner about the zebra foal that died last week. Ultimately, there was no other option than to redeem the foal.
