From mid-2025, Vitoria-Gasteiz will be a direct bus connection towards the Foronda and Loiu airportswith nine daily trips in each direction, expanding to 13 during the summer. This new service includes stops in Foronda and Bolueta upon prior reservation, with tickets priced at 15 euros and discounts available for large families.
In addition, the new bus transport concession between Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz, jointly managed by the municipalities of Bizkaia and Álava, will reduce the price of the regular ticket by 19.8%, from 7.45 euros to 5.98. Additional discounts of 20% are implemented with BAT, BARIK and MUGI cards, and monthly, quarterly and annual subscriptions with discounts of up to 30% for young people under 26 years of age.
The uniform concession was finally awarded to the company Autobuses La Unión SA on Thursday
Reorganization of lines and extended timetables
The project reorganizes the current seven lines into six new ones, adapted to current mobility needs. Opening hours will be extended, with departures every day at 11:00 PM and until 12:00 PM on weekends. These improvements are intended to optimize resources and ensure efficient public transport. The new buses will have approved platforms and seats reserved for people with reduced mobility. In addition, they will offer features such as increased space between seats, video surveillance, entertainment systems, WiFi, USB chargers and bicycle anchors, significantly improving the user experience.
It is estimated that 1.3 million people will use the six lines in the first year, of which 100,000 will use the connection to the airports. Demand is expected to grow gradually and reach 1.4 million annual users by the end of the concession.
This new concession, valid for ten years, marks a significant progress in the connectivity and quality of public transport in the Basque Country. Regional officials emphasize that it meets historic demands, such as a direct connection to airports, and strengthens the intercity transport network with more accessible and economic services.
