Tourist attacked? – Court stops shooting of female bear in Trentino

Date:

The administrative court of the northern Italian province of Trent on Friday suspended an order signed by Trentino Governor Maurizio Fugatti to kill the problem bear, known by the code KJ1.

There is still no certainty that KJ1 was responsible for the injury of a French tourist, the administrative court, which upheld the objection of animal protection organisation Leal to the shooting order, said in its reasoning.

Animal rights activists welcomed the court’s ruling. The forestry department is now continuing its search for the 20-year-old bear believed to be responsible for the attack. KJ1 is currently travelling with her cubs through areas north of Lake Garda, it was said.

Genetic samples confirming that the animal was indeed responsible for the attack are currently being processed. The governor of Trentino is always responsible for ordering the killing. The request requires a positive opinion from the Council of State.

In April 2023, a bear fatally injured a 26-year-old jogger in Caldes, Trentino. Trentino recently approved a bill aimed at curbing the spread of the bear population.

The draft provides for the possibility of killing up to eight animals per year. Recent estimates put the number of bears in Trentino at over 100.
