The second round of presidential elections begins in Croatia

Current President Zoran Milanovic is a clear favourite, and his shift towards Eurosceptic, nationalist and pro-Russian positions is well known.

About 6,700 polling stations opened in Croatia at 7 a.m. this Sunday, allowing 3.8 million voters to choose the head of state between the current president, Zoran Milanovic, backed by the center-left opposition, and Dragan Primorac, candidate of the conservative HDZ. at the government.

Milanovic, with 49% of the votes, and Primorac, with 19%, were the two most voted among the eight candidates who participated in the first round of these elections two weeks ago.

Voting ends at 7 p.m., when the first projections based on exit polls are published.

The publication of the first unofficial and partial results from the Electoral Commission is expected half an hour later.

The latest polls by private broadcaster Nova TV and public television HTV, published on Friday before the day of reflection, show that Milanovic will achieve his goal. between 63 and 67% of the voteswhile Primorac would receive a maximum of 28%.

Milanovic, 58 years old, was Prime Minister (2011-2015) and leader of the Social Democratic Party (2007-2016). During the last five years of his first presidential term, he shifted from progressive to sovereigntist positions. Eurosceptic, nationalist and even pro-Russian.

Primorac, a 59-year-old professor with no political charisma who was Minister of Science and Education between 2003 and 2009, promises to strongly support the Euro-Atlantic policy of the conservative government, which is suffering from a series of corruption scandals.

The presidential position, with a five-year term of office, in Croatia is mainly of a protocol and representative nature, but also influences the country’s foreign policy, together with the government and the leadership of the country’s armed forces.
