As the “Krone” recently learned, a 73-year-old Austrian citizen was kidnapped in Niger.
The woman was allegedly dragged into an all-terrain vehicle in the desert town of Agadez. Then their tracks were lost. The Austrian Embassy in Algeria is aware and is in contact with EU partner countries, the EU delegation and regional authorities, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna.
Working as a development worker for 30 years
It has now been confirmed to the ‘Krone’ that it is a 73-year-old woman who has been working as a development worker for 30 years.
Like its neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger is fighting groups linked to the terrorist organizations Al Qaeda and Islamic State (IS). Over the past decade, fighting in West Africa’s central Sahel region has killed thousands of people and displaced millions.
