Impotence Surgery – Malpractice: Guilty Verdict Against Controversial Doctor

Date:

Trial reopened against urologist accused of botching five surgeries for impotence. Two of the five men treated committed suicide, the indictment said. The verdict is not final.

New judge – old allegations: After a change of judges, the trial of the urologist Ralf Herwig – also known as the controversial LabTruck operator for PCR tests in Tyrol – had to be reopened in the Viennese regional court. The doctor, whose license had been revoked by the Medical Association, had verbally defended himself during recent negotiations against charges of screwing up five patients.

Now he made a confession. But otherwise, on the advice of his lawyer Nikolaus Rast, he said nothing more about incorrect diagnoses and treatments.

Treatment not allowed
But they are the subject of the indictment: He is said to have discovered and “repaired” a “venous leak” as the cause of impotence in five men. However, this so-called sclerotherapy is considered an experimental treatment and is not allowed. In fact, the patients’ problems remain – two of them are said to have committed suicide as a result of the botched surgeries. The Supreme Court had clearly described Herwig’s method as malpractice.

Judge Andreas Böhm made short work of it – and found the doctor guilty: ten months probation, not final.
