Playing with cuddly toys: baby gorilla captured at Istanbul airport

Date:

A baby gorilla found at Istanbul airport is attracting a lot of attention in Turkey. The monkey was found in a cage at the end of November. Now he is being cared for again in a zoo in Istanbul.

“It is the first time we have found a gorilla of this species in Turkey,” said Fahrettin Ulu, director of nature conservation and national parks, according to state news agency Anadolu. The monkey cub is therefore an endangered western gorilla. Apparently he was being illegally transported from Nigeria to Thailand.

At first he behaved very shy and melancholy. Now, however, he is cheerful, plays with stuffed animals and an abacus and sometimes drums on his chest, Anadolu says. His self-confidence will definitely get a boost.

The future of the animal is still unclear
The fate of the young great ape has moved many in Turkey. More than a hundred thousand users took part in a call from the nature conservation authority on Platform X to find a name for the gorilla, which has now been baptized “Zeytin” (German: Olive).

According to Ulu, the baby monkey has already gained one kilo and grown 3.5 centimeters since its discovery. Veterinarian Gülfem Esmen is one of those who cares for the gorilla – this is also new territory for her. She told Anadolu to investigate what a monkey could eat. The monkey is now fed milk for breakfast and snacks such as fruit, vegetables and nuts throughout the day.

It is still unclear what will happen to the monkey next. The hope is that “Zeytin” can return to his home country and be released into the wild in the rainforest, says director Ulu. How this could happen is still unclear.
