Up to ten drones of unknown origin flew over a military airfield in Bavaria. The Bavarian investigative authorities do not rule out an act of espionage in connection with Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
The police are asking for information
The Bavarian State Criminal Investigation Department (LKA) is now asking for information from witnesses to identify those responsible for the drone flights. The Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation because it is the central office responsible for combating extremism and terrorism.
According to the LKA, the police were informed on Sunday evening about the drone flight in Manching near Ingolstadt. Officials discovered up to ten drones at the scene. Despite the request for a police helicopter, those responsible for the illegal overflights could not be identified.
Possible espionage via military installations
Drone flights had already been reported over the military security areas in Manching and Neuburg an der Donau in December, without the pilots having been identified. It is believed that the drones took pictures of the military installations.
The military-technical service for aircraft and aviation equipment of the Bundeswehr is located in Manching and tests aircraft for the air force. Tactical Air Force Squadron 74 is based in Neuburg and uses Eurofighters to monitor southern German airspace 24 hours a day.
