Suspected sabotage – Crimea: explosions at Russian air base

Date:

There have been several explosions near a Russian air base in Nowofyodorovka on the annexed Crimean peninsula in southern Ukraine. Videos of explosions and high clouds of smoke are circulating on social media. According to the Moscow Ministry of Defense, an ammunition depot exploded on the grounds of the air base. Although the ministry reported no casualties, there were several injured, according to Russian media.

Three people were injured and taken to hospital, Russian news channel CHP Crimea reported on Telegram. Among them is a 13-year-old boy and an older woman. Locals say there were at least 12 explosions. They could be seen from the seaside town of Feodosiya. There, beach holidaymakers fled the area.

The Crimean government tried to calm down. “All necessary measures for the security of the population have been taken,” said Sergei Aksjonov, the Russian-appointed head of government in Crimea, which had been illegally annexed under international law. An area within a three-mile radius of the base is being cordoned off (see video above). Aksyonov did not comment on the cause of the explosion.

possible sabotage
Observers suspect sabotage because Ukrainian troops are more than 200 kilometers away. According to previous reports, the Ukrainian army does not currently have missiles with this range. The Ministry of Defense in Kiev has not commented on the incident.

Fighter jets attacking the south of the country in the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine usually take off from Nowofyodorovka airport. The Russian Defense Ministry said no aircraft were damaged. One is extinguishing the fire and determining the cause of the explosions.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. During the invasion that began in late February, Moscow repeatedly demanded that Crimea be recognized as Russian territory — something Kiev clearly rejects. Internationally, the peninsula with its more than two million inhabitants is still considered Ukrainian territory.
