Shooting plans persist – descendants of wolf pairs mauled sheep in East Tyrol

Date:

Is there a wolf pack in East Tyrol? As the country announced Tuesday, a wolf that killed sheep in Lavant in early July would be descended from the problem wolves last released for shooting. Despite this new finding, those responsible are sticking to the decision.

“The decision to remove the two wolves 108MATK and 121FATK in the Lavant area, taken last Friday following the corresponding recommendation from the Wolf, Bear, Lynx Board of Trustees, remains valid,” LHStv said. Josef Geisler (ÖVP) released after receiving a DNA result.

300 kilos of beef tenderloin
The killing of a 300-kilogram ox on July 30 in Lavant was clearly due to the two wolves 108MATK and 121FATK approved to be shot. “The samples contain DNA from both animals,” the country said Tuesday evening.

Threat to all alpine animals
“These problem wolves kill not only sheep, but also near-adult cattle. They are a threat to all alpine animals. We absolutely must prevent a pack from forming that even kills cattle,” Geisler continued. Legally, the removal is covered by those who are authorized to hunt. This was also confirmed by a legal opinion commissioned by the federal state of Tyrol.

Eight wolves now
Another wolf, not previously registered in Austria, was found in the course of cracks on July 27 and 31 in Anras. It is a male animal with the designation 165MATK. This increases the number of individuals found in East Tyrol to eight this year. In the immediately adjacent Carinthian area, three cattle were injured in wolf attacks this year, one of which had to be slaughtered, the state reported.

Also killed deer
The male wolf with the designation 151MATK was detected again in the course of the sample search from a July 27 crack event in Obertilliach. This person has already been confirmed in the killing of sheep in Obertilliach and Anras and in the killing of deer in Kartitsch.

A bear has also been found
This year, seven different wolf individuals and now a bear have been genetically confirmed in the Lienz district. Several fractures in the municipality of Anras at the end of July detected one bear DNA and four wolf DNA. “It is not yet known who is involved,” he said. In addition to the wolves that have already been genetically registered, another female wolf with the designation 163FATK was identified in East Tyrol that has not yet been registered in Austria.
