In the face of climate change, the government of Nepal is considering moving the Mount Everest Base Camp for security reasons. There, the glacial ice would continue to melt, which could pose a danger to alpinists at the base camp.
Large glacial lakes can form and at some point they can suddenly burst like a flood over the base camp and nearby villages.
The government is now looking for alternative locations for base camps further away near villages where there is normally no ice, official Khimlal Gautam said.
A decision on how to proceed will not be made until all interest groups agree, said the head of Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism Taranath Adhikari.
Glacier ice towers a rare sight
Gautam also emphasized that over the years there have been more and more expeditions in the Everest region and they therefore consume more energy, burning liquefied gas or kerosene to generate heat. While you used to see tall, craggy towers of glacial ice at base camp, even in the spring, this is rarely the case these days.
