Mountain rescuers eventually tried to take the man down to the valley on a mountain stretcher. However, due to dusk, a helicopter had to be found.

The 78-year-old covered about half the distance. At 6:30pm nothing happened. Due to his state of exhaustion, he had no chance of getting into the valley under his own power.

Just in time for nightfall, the German was rescued by helicopter and flown to the Schlegeis reservoir, where he was again handed over to the mountain rescue service. His companion was accompanied by emergency services along the hiking trail to the reservoir. Finally, the two were taken to the valley.
