Belgian customs seized a record amount of cocaine in the port of Antwerp last year: the authorities seized a total of 109.9 tons (2021: almost 90 tons), customs announced on Tuesday in Beveren near Antwerp. Belgium thus remains the most important gateway for cocaine to Europe.
In contrast, the amount of cocaine seized in the port of Rotterdam fell to 52.5 tonnes last year, Dutch customs reported at the joint press conference. Rotterdam is the largest container port in Europe.
Since the summer of 2022, the Belgian and Dutch police and judiciary have joined forces in a special task force to combat large-scale drug smuggling via the port of Antwerp to the Netherlands. They also cooperate with the customs and tax authorities.
