Sighting in Bludenz – Vorarlberg now releases wolf to shoot

Date:

After a wolf was filmed at night in the settlement area of Bludenz (Vorarlberg), the state government is now responding and releasing the predator to be shot. Experts do not support this approach.

After a wolf sighting in the settlement area of Bludenz, a red line has been crossed for the governor of the state of Vorarlberg, Markus Wallner and State Councilor Christian Gantner: “The wolf does not belong in the densely populated settlement area. The safety of the population is the highest priority.” That is why the Bludenz district council will issue a shooting order on Wednesday, the state said.

The approach is not without controversy
This approach is not without controversy. State ecologist Hubert Schatz also assessed the situation more calmly and did not consider shooting necessary. As long as the wolf only wanders through the city once, he does not see the animal as a problem. Only if this behavior occurs repeatedly should appropriate measures be considered, Schatz said Wednesday morning.

The wolf can be seen up close in a video on Instagram:

The state was still clarifying whether the spotted animal was actually a wolf. In the morning, wolfhound and husky owners were visited and checked to ensure it was not a lost animal. According to these studies and according to expert assessments, it can now be assumed that it is a wolf.

Where is the wolf now?
Further measures include informing the population and calling on possible food sources (such as organic waste bags and the like) to avoid or eliminate possible food sources. The question is of course whether the wolf will be spotted at all. According to Hubert Schatz, it is quite possible that the animal was on its way from the Rätikon to the Großes Walsertal, then Master Isegrim would have been over the mountains long ago.
