The fire in a barn in Lassing in Styria ended tragically: calves and chickens in the building died, only five animals were rescued in time. The cause may have been a lightning strike.
At around 5:30 a.m., a 71-year-old and her 47-year-old daughter from the Liezen district drove to the building to do morning work. When they arrived, the women saw smoke from afar and immediately called the fire brigade. On the spot, a 43-year-old rescued five calves from the barn.
Nearly 100 firefighters on duty
When firefighters arrived, the barn was already ablaze. A total of 86 firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to surrounding buildings. The farmhouse and outbuilding burned down completely. Numerous animals died in the fire.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. A further investigation by the police into the cause of the fire will follow.
