Winter will show its intense side in Austria from Wednesday. Significant snowfall is expected. The regions along the main Alpine ridge in Salzburg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Styria are particularly affected. The severe weather center has already issued a warning.
Meteorologists predict new snow amounts of up to 15 centimeters, and more snow could fall in stuck areas. The snowfall limit varies greatly: while in the east of the country snowfall can be expected at low altitudes, in the west it is at about 700 meters above sea level. The federal capital Vienna is also expected to be affected by snowfall, especially in the morning.
Up to 15 centimeters of fresh snow
Meteorologists predict new snow amounts of up to 15 centimeters, and more snow could fall in densely populated areas. The snowfall limit varies greatly: while in the east of the country snowfall can be expected at low altitudes, in the west it is at about 700 meters above sea level. The federal capital Vienna will probably not be spared from the snowfall.
This time it is real snowflakes and not the so-called industrial snow that caused temporary winter conditions in parts of Vienna around the turn of the year. The first flakes fell in the morning (see photo).
Yellow warning level and caution on roads
A yellow snow warning was issued for parts of the country, especially for southwestern Lower Austria and northern Styria, but also for Upper Austria. Drivers should be particularly careful, as snow can develop at higher elevations in combination with northerly winds. Disruptions to road and rail traffic are expected.
The weather will improve towards the weekend
After the snowy Wednesday, there is a significant improvement in the weather in sight. Thursday will bring mostly sunny weather in the west and south, while there will initially be residual cloud in the eastern half that will clear during the day. The temperatures remain wintery, between minus 2 and plus 5 degrees during the day.
A high-pressure area brings a lot of sunshine, especially in mountainous areas. However, in the Lake Constance area and over the lowlands in the north, east and southeast there are some areas of ground and high fog that will only disappear in certain places during the day. The minimum temperatures continue to fluctuate between minus 9 and plus 1 degrees. Plus 5 degrees during the day is possible. From Saturday, high pressure will ensure calm and mainly sunny weather.
For all winter fans, the coming days offer ideal conditions for winter sports activities. However, caution is advised: the fresh snow masses can increase the risk of avalanches in the mountains. Current warnings and information from local authorities must be strictly adhered to.
