In April, the Austrian passport will receive a new security feature. During the personalization process, the personal portrait image is “burned into” the data page of the newly issued Bordeaux red documents using the “laser image perforation,” the Interior Ministry announced. There is also a new emergency passport from now on.
The new security feature is intended to increase protection against counterfeiting. Viewing the data page against the light reveals a contoured image of the portrait image.
New emergency passport design
The emergency passport will also be given a new design and a revised design. This can be requested if the passport or identity card is lost or stolen or the document can no longer be used and there is an important journey in progress that cannot be postponed. In a transitional phase, in addition to the newly designed emergency passports, those based on the previous model will also be issued. The price for the emergency passport and the application procedure remain unchanged.
“The Austrian passport is one of the safest documents in the world,” emphasized Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP). “The cooperation between the Ministry of the Interior and the Austrian State Printing Office has ensured for years that this travel document is protected against forgery.”
