The muzzle was often a practical vehicle that could be taken out of your pocket if the situation quickly called for a muzzle for your four-legged friend. This holder has been prohibited since the beginning of this year, but an exception applies to veterinarians.
Most users had no idea the pain their beloved four-legged friend had to endure. On the contrary: it was often wrongly thought that the soft loop was more comfortable than a stiff snout made of plastic, metal or leather.
However, if used incorrectly, the muzzle loops can be classified as contrary to animal welfare: when used as a muzzle replacement, it is impossible for the dogs to pant due to the nylon loop tied tightly around the muzzle. However, this is absolutely necessary for air exchange and cooling the internal body temperature.
Banned from January 1, 2025
“The ban on the use of mouth loops for private individuals is a great success for animal protection and our efforts,” says a delighted Eva Persy of the Vienna Ombudsman for Animal Protection. She has been advocating for this measure for two years.
Ignorance does not protect against punishment
At the same time as their use, the purchase and possession of these ‘devices’ was also banned. In the event of a complaint under the Animal Welfare Act, fines of up to 7,500 euros can be imposed.
