Action on thin ice – chamois stranded on Grundlsee: rescue by lasso

Date:

Using unusual means, a lost and weakened chamois was literally pulled from the ice on the frozen Grundlsee in Styria. Professional hunter Manfred Gumpinger quickly grabbed the lasso – with success.

The ice was much too thin for a rescue operation on foot, Gumpinger said in an interview with the ‘Krone’. So he had to improvise together with a colleague. Time was of the essence as the chamois ended up with its hind legs in the icy water.

“We tried two or three times…”
The first attempts with the rope failed and the frightened Gams could not be reached. A piece of wood, which the duo attached to the lasso, helped. “We tried it two or three times, and then it worked,” de Grundlseer recalls.

The chamois, who was immediately given the name ‘Ice Princess’, no longer resisted being rescued too vigorously due to her exhaustion ‘and soon calmed down again’. She is currently recovering from her life-threatening trip on the ice in Gumpinger’s stable in Gößl.

“Ice Princess” is making progress
“She’s not doing that bad,” says her rescuer. “The ‘Ice Princess’ is making progress and is on the run again.” The hunter estimates that she will need a few more days to fully recover. The exhausting fight for survival has probably led to overworked muscles.

Soon back in the wild
As soon as the “Ice Princess” is completely fit again, she will be released back into the wild. Gumpinger gave her an ear tag so he could keep an eye on her. “For the time being, she has a special status and she will certainly not be shot,” assures the lifesaver with the lasso.
