Dramatic scenes took place in the Tyrolean Ötztal on Friday morning. A local ice climber (41) fell during a hike and was seriously injured. The accident was extremely bad luck.
According to police, the 41-year-old Austrian climbed the “Pfifikus” route uphill along a fixed rope into the “Burgsteiner” icefall in the municipality of Längenfeld around 10:30 a.m. on Friday. The man had almost completed his tour when the accident happened.
The backstop became ineffective
The ice climber fell several meters below the goal for an unknown reason. He was particularly unlucky: the pulley with the rope clamp got stuck. As a result, the backstop became ineffective and the 41-year-old fell 30 meters into the depths without stopping. The man hit an icy platform and suffered serious injuries.
Still, the victim managed to make an emergency call. The emergency services rescued the seriously injured man from an emergency helicopter with the help of a cable winch. The man was then flown to the clinic in Innsbruck.
