After 468 days under Hamas control, 33 Israeli hostages can hope to be released. Israel agreed to a deal with the terrorist militia. In return, 735 prisoners will be released, including terrorists and murderers.
On October 7, 2023, 251 people were kidnapped to the Gaza Strip in the major attack on Israel. Following an agreement in November 2023, 105 hostages were released and 31 Israeli prisoners are considered officially dead, according to their government. The first hostages are expected to be released on Sunday.
It is unclear how many hostages are still alive
The families of the hostages, who are to be released within 42 days, have already been informed. The list of repatriations mainly includes so-called “humanitarian” cases: women, children, the elderly and the sick. However, Hamas did not say how many of the 33 people affected were still alive. Israel, however, assumes that most of them survived.
This post shows the 33 hostages who will be released as part of the deal:
Murderers and terrorists on release list
The Justice Ministry has already published a list of 735 Palestinian prisoners who will be released during the first phase of the ceasefire. According to The Times of Israel, these include numerous terrorists serving life sentences for murder. The list reportedly includes members of Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Fatah movement. But there are also women and children currently being held in Israeli prisons.
Surrender dead or alive
Seven days after the start of the ceasefire, Israel is expected to receive a full status report on the hostages on the list. As The Times of Israel reports, the government has insisted on taking the living of the 33 first and then the bodies.
The release will take place in phases
A release schedule was also set: this calls for the return of three hostages on the first day of the ceasefire and another four on the seventh day. Thereafter, three hostages will be returned every week for a period of four weeks. In the last, sixth week of the first phase, fourteen hostages are eventually returned. The names of the persons being released must be provided 24 hours in advance.
The list includes twelve women and children, ten older men and eleven other men under the age of 50, including dual nationality Austrian-Israeli Tal Shoham.
Another sixty-five people are believed to still be held by Hamas, many of whom are believed to be already dead. These will be brought back as part of a second phase of an agreement – which provides for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
