What a series of unfortunate circumstances: During a car repair in Strallegg in Eastern Styria, a 24-year-old accidentally dropped a lighter from his pocket – there was an explosion! The man suffered second-degree burns.
The man from the Weiz neighborhood was in his own garage repairing a friend’s car around 9 p.m. He was alone in the car pit under the car to replace a faulty fuel pump.
Fuel may have been spilled on the floor while the fuel was being drained. When the 24-year-old finally pulled a knife from his pocket, a lighter slipped out, fell to the ground and is believed to have explosively ignited the petrol fumes in the vehicle pit.
Neighbors rushed to help
The 24-year-old climbed out of the well via a ladder. He immediately took off his shirt and screamed for water. Neighbors immediately rendered first aid and called 911. The burning fumes were quickly extinguished with a powder extinguisher. Rescue workers and an emergency doctor provided first aid. The East Styrian was admitted to the LKH Graz with second-degree burns to his hands, feet and face.
