Many people know that old Christmas trees should be picked up at the curb. But it’s not just compost plants and bioenergy producers who are happy with the last leftovers of Christmas; some Christmas trees end up in local zoos, where residents gorge themselves on them!
Initially lush green, but now they have dried out due to the heating air, the sun and time. Many Christmas trees have to be removed in January. But what should you do with it? In Linz, after January 7 and 13, they will also be collected on January 20. Important: decorate completely, but do not chop it into pieces.
Subsequent disposal possible
“The waste from Linz AG is on its way with seven compaction vehicles. Approximately 30,000 Christmas trees are thrown away in Linz every year, most of them on the first day,” reports Susanne Gillhofer, spokeswoman for Linz AG. “They are then chopped and composted by partner companies.” If you want to keep the Christmas decorations longer, you can hand the plants in later at the waste collection point or shred them in the organic waste bin. Elsewhere they are burned to produce bioenergy.
Crispy snack
Some Christmas trees are converted into energy in a different way: in local zoos, some residents are happy with the pine and spruce trees. In Schmiding they serve as a crunchy treat for kangaroos and Bactrian camels, and as climbing fun for big cats. In the Linz zoo, goats jump on the trees, and in Walding the guanaco stallion “Ronaldo” and his ladies enjoyed the Christmas tree snack.
However, unsold, undecorated trees from organic farming are the main options for animal (post-)Christmas joy, as tinsel scraps or overlooked metal hooks can seriously injure animals.
