The new year is still short, but the Garden Eden animal shelter in Klagenfurt has already registered a series of abandonments. Now a whole family of dogs is left out in the cold. The zookeepers are irritated.
“One abandonment is followed by another – since the beginning of this year, one dog and two cats have simply been abandoned at our gates,” said Dennis Fingerl, zookeeper at Garden Eden animal shelter, angrily. And on Sunday evening, an unidentified person left a dog and its four puppies in the freezing cold. “The mother dog is extremely thin and her offspring have terrible diarrhea; “They were all completely dirty…,” is how the zookeeper describes the condition of the poor four-legged friends.
Animals are repeatedly abandoned in front of the animal shelter, which pushes caretakers to the limit: “Leaving them in this cold in strange places not only means stress for the animals, but also that the animal shelter must be informed 30 days in advance before we are allowed convey them,” Fingerl explains. The result: the animal shelter is bursting at the seams. A caregiver must care for a maximum of 60 animals: “We want to ensure good care and not just process the animals. Leaving animals behind makes this very difficult for us!”
Important information is missing
Fingerl doesn’t understand: “Why don’t people call in advance? Or at least give us some information about the animal?” The animal’s name for a known response in such a stressful situation or parts of its medical history would be incredibly helpful.
“Every life is precious, please don’t forget that,” Fingerl urges again. If anyone knows of the nest, he or she should contact the Garden of Eden animal shelter. In any case, the condition of the dog and its puppies is not good; the zookeepers are now waiting for a veterinarian.
