Austria’s last absolute has probably just disappeared, but Hans Peter Doskozil clearly remains state governor. For Norbert Hofer this means politically early retirement, but for the federal and Vienna SPÖ it does not mean anything good.
Let’s call it a luxurious defeat: Hans Peter Doskozil loses a few percentage points, but remains safely and clearly governor of Burgenland. That’s all that matters. He will mainly owe this to the little Greens. The mini-opposition party, which traditionally cultivates difficult terrain in the easternmost state, manages to penetrate the state parliament and thus prevents the FPÖ and ÖVP from acquiring an absolute majority in the mandates. The Freedom Party’s gains and the ÖVP’s losses were to be expected and are almost within limits (the expectation). After all, it wasn’t Norbert Hofer’s triumphant home win; in any case he took second place.
