Reports that the EU wants to ban the key material for jeans have caused an uproar. A hoax, as it turned out. The fact that the natural fiber is energy-intensive and hardly recyclable remains a fact – the “Krone” has looked at what the popular material does to our environment.
“The EU plans to ban cotton from 2030,” rattled a report via various online media. Emotions on social networks ran wild. After all, it is a popular raw material for textiles. But cotton cultivation is energy intensive and the conditions for pickers are extreme. The crop originally comes from the tropics, where it rains a lot. The white cotton becomes saturated and rotten. Therefore, cultivation was moved to dry areas where artificial irrigation is required.
