At least 23 people have been killed in several landslides and flash floods on the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java. Eleven others were initially still missing. The reason was persistent heavy rain and strong winds.
First, rocks fell on a house in the village of Pikat on Sunday evening (local time) on the popular holiday island of Bali. Four people were killed and four others were injured. One person is still missing. The rescue work was hampered by bad weather and steep terrain.
Another landslide occurred in Ubung Kaja town on Monday morning, burying a house under ground and rubble and damaging other houses. Four residents were killed and one person is missing. Excavators cleared the rubble and sniffer dogs were also used.

Flash floods and landslides followed on the neighboring island of Java on Monday evening. “Fifteen people died. Some were fishing, others sought shelter when they were swept away by the flash flood,” the head of the regional disaster response said. In addition, several people were buried under masses of mud.
Authorities warned of further flooding and flash flooding. People who are near mountain slopes or rivers should be especially careful. The rainy season in Bali and Java is from November to April.
