Half sentence served – hapless Captain Schettino applies for release from prison

Date:

13 years after the shipwreck of the “Costa Concordia” that left 32 dead, the captain of the wrecked cruise ship, Francesco Schettino, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison, has requested parole from prison.

Schettino has already served more than half of his sentence, reaching the deadline for access to alternative measures besides prison, his lawyer said. A court will decide on his request on March 4.

Sentenced to 16 years in prison
Schettino was eventually sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2017 and has been in prison in Rome ever since. He failed in his demand for a renegotiation of his trial in 2023. The High Court in Rome rejected a similar request from Francesco Schettino.

Maneuver failed, escape from sinking ship
The captain came under fire not only for the failed maneuver, but also for abandoning ship while the evacuation was still underway.

32 dead, including no Austrians
The cruise ship “Costa Concordia” hit a rock off the island of Giglio on January 13, 2012 and capsized. Of the more than 4,200 people on board, 32 people died. All 77 Austrians on the “Costa Concordia” – including the then mayor of Salzburg, Heinz Schaden – survived the accident.
