Pop effect around the recordings in Linz. The week before, wild scenes had taken place in Neue Heimat when an argument between two men escalated. A 38-year-old Chechen was injured and initially identified the alleged perpetrator. But now everything is different.
It was a confusing story from the start. Shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, a showdown took place in Benzstrasse in Neue Heimat. After an argument about money, according to the victim’s later statement, another man pulled out a gun and shot.
But not the perpetrator
The 38-year-old Chechen was seriously injured and the perpetrator fled. The victim later identified a 43-year-old Syrian as the perpetrator. But the Chechen remained vague and after further questioning took everything back. The Syrian is not the perpetrator. How is that possible? The perpetrator and the victim apparently did not know each other; Chechens would collect money debts, but only had a telephone number.
New suspect
The 43-year-old also conjured an alibi out of a hat; he stated that he had been working. “The 38-year-old was then shown six photos, and in one of them he recognized the alleged perpetrator,” said Reinhard Huemer-Steiner, spokesman for the Linz public prosecutor’s office. But now things get really complicated: Although authorities have a photo of the man, they don’t know who he is.
Identity card photo riddle
“The photo is from an ID card, there is a name for it, but it could be an alias,” says Huemer-Steiner. But they don’t want to say more at this point anyway, because they are now looking for the suspect.
The 43-year-old Syrian has now been released because there is no longer sufficient suspicion.
