In western India, several panicked people jumped from a train on a neighboring track and were hit by a passing train. At least twelve prisoners were fatally injured, broadcaster NDTV and other Indian media reported.
Accordingly, passengers jumped from carriages of the Pushpak Express after rumors of a fire spread there. It is said that someone pulled the emergency brake, causing the train to stop. Panic broke out on the train. The messages turned out to be false.
Authorities assumed 12 deaths, NDTV reported, citing the head of the affected Jalgaon district in Maharashtra state.
“Distressing”
The loss of life in this tragic accident is shocking, Union State Government Chief Devendra Fadnavis wrote on Platform X. Rescuers would take care of the injured.
Panic among the passengers
The accident reportedly took place near a railway station in Jalgaon district. It was initially unclear how many people were on the Pushpak Express at the time of the accident. Initial information said there was a spark on a wagon due to a ‘hot axle’ or a ‘locked brake’, news agency PTI reported citing a railway official. “Some passengers panicked. They pulled the emergency brake and some of them jumped out.”
India has one of the largest railway networks in the world. However, many trains in the world’s most populous country are old and some tracks need renovation. Accidents happen again and again. The worst accident to date occurred in 1981, when at least 800 people were killed. The Indian government is investing heavily in modernizing the railways and expanding the rail network.
