Boy (2) among victims – knife attack in Bavaria: suspect in court

Date:

After the fatal knife attack in Aschaffenburg in Northern Bavaria, the 28-year-old suspect will be brought before the judge on Thursday, according to the police. A two-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man were killed in the attack on Wednesday.

The man who allegedly killed two people with a knife in Aschaffenburg apparently targeted children, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) said on Wednesday evening during a visit to the crime scene.

According to Herrmann, he attacked several children and teachers in a kindergarten group with a kitchen knife. A 41-year-old German passerby tried to fend off the attacker and paid for his efforts with his life. Among the dead is also a two-year-old boy of Moroccan descent. Other people were injured, some seriously, including a two-year-old Syrian girl.

Suspect probably mentally ill
According to Hermann, the suspect had to leave Afghanistan because of an asylum procedure he canceled and he was also treated for psychological problems. The suspect was recently reported at an asylum seeker center in the region and had already appeared to the police several times. There are no indications of a radical attitude, says Hermann. A check at the man’s home address also revealed no such information. The crime was apparently a result of his mental illness.

Three seriously injured people are still in hospital
Three seriously injured people were still in hospital. “But they are all out of danger,” said a spokesman for the German police. According to current findings, the attacker injured the two-year-old girl from Syria three times in the neck area with a kitchen knife. In addition, a 72-year-old man was attacked and suffered multiple injuries in the thorax area, according to Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach. A 59-year-old teacher broke her arm in the commotion.

Decision on pre-trial detention in the afternoon
The search for the motive for the crime is now the focus of investigators. Witnesses must be heard and evidence must be investigated. The suspect is expected to appear in court later today. This will decide whether the 28-year-old will be placed in a psychiatric hospital or taken into custody. “Right now the speculation is very much in the direction of his obvious mental illness,” Herrmann said the night before.

Investigators are also likely to be concerned about the question of his guilt at the time of the crime. In addition, authorities will have to answer questions about why the alleged perpetrator, who had to leave the country, was still in Germany.

Politicians expressed their dissatisfaction
Politicians from various parties expressed their shock and offered their condolences to the relatives of the victims and injured. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) met with Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) and the heads of the security authorities on Wednesday evening. Scholz explained that “misunderstood tolerance is completely inappropriate” towards perpetrators who came to Germany to seek protection. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) spoke of a “cowardly and vile act”, the circumstances of which must be fully clarified.
