Stinke Flower in Sydney attracts tens of thousands

Date:

The rare stink flower “Putricia” is currently blooming in the Sydney Botanic Garden. She has already attracted 20,000 spectators since Thursday. The waiting time is at least 90 minutes.

The time to catch a glimpse of “putricia” is pressing: the spectacle lasts only about 24 hours, which is why the special greenhouse is open until night on Friday. The next time the titanium root blooms, it will take years.

The plant is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra and produces the largest flower in the entire plant kingdom. In individual cases this can reach more than three meters in height. The huge tuber weighs more than 100 kilograms. When it opens, the plant develops an odor to attract insects. The confection has been compared to rotting fish, rotting meat and sweaty sports socks.

Comparison with vomit
“Take wet socks from your childhood and blend them with some cat food you left in a blender in the sun. Then add a little vomit from the previous day, mix everything and take the lid,” said an employee of the botanical garden.

The name “putricia” comes from the English word “putrid”, which means “wrong” or “disgusting”. The Latin name “Amorphophallus titanum” means about “shapely giant penis”. The plant is not only infamous for its size and stench, but also for its phallic shape.

In May 2022, a titanic root had also blossomed in the botanical garden of the University of Vienna. Even then, she attracted countless visitors to longer opening hours.
