The deposit for beer bottles will go from 9 to 20 cents – after more than 40 years without an increase. Official confirmation is still pending, but the sector is nervous: stored bottles can increase significantly in value almost overnight.
According to a media report, after the introduction of deposits for disposable bottles, a change is also coming for classic beer bottles. After more than 40 years without an increase, the deposit will rise from the current 9 cents to 20 cents – more than doubling, reports “Der Standard”. An official confirmation is still pending, the increase is expected in February.
The value of the bottles increases overnight
The value of bottles already stored with a 9 cent deposit increases almost overnight, for which you will later receive 20 cents. This makes the sector nervous, the report says. Therefore, the exact timing of the increase in deposit costs, which industry experts are already expecting, is a closely guarded secret.
Incentive for more recycling
The Austrian brewers expect that the 20 cents will be sufficient incentive to no longer conveniently throw away finished containers in glass containers or residual waste. At the same time, the higher deposit should not deter beer lovers from reaching for the refillable bottle.
An increase to 25 cents, which the latest regulations require for cans and PET bottles, seemed excessive for the industry, which is united on these issues.
