They had just decided to spend their lives together – this was a sudden and dramatic end. Greta Marie Otteson and Arno Els Quinton had enjoyed a liqueur advertised as a “homemade” on vacation in Vietnam – a few hours later the couple was dead.
The 33-year-old British and her 36-year-old fiancé had spent Christmas in the Asian rural dinner on Christmas Eve in a restaurant, they returned to their holiday villa. At the reception they received the fatal drink: two bottles of lemoncello were delivered by a restaurant that advertised the lemon liqueur of “Homemade”.
British complained about “Worst Kater of all time”
The next day, Otteson informed her parents via WhatsApp that she was suffering from the “worst hangover ever”. She also noticed visual disruptions. But instead of going to the hospital, the couple just decided to sleep out the supposed intoxication.
A fateful mistake: on Boxing Day the two were found in their accommodation. The police finally investigated the empty lemoncello apartments and found the remains of methanol. The industrial micals are used as a solvent in dyes, varnish, resins or in antifreeze. Consumption can lead to blind or even death.
Although investigations are underway, there has been no arrest – the restaurant is still open. The families now demand justice for the death of the young holidaymakers. “Our goal is to kill the people who have delivered alcohol and Greta and Arno killed in court,” said a family member.
