Dramatic scenes took place on Sunday evening on the Inn Valley Autobahn (A12) in the Tyrolean Unterland: within moments a German’s car went up in flames. The driver could have left the vehicle earlier in time. She got away with the horror.
The German was on the Inntal Autobahn from Germany to Innsbruck shortly before 7pm when her car suddenly lost performance at the exit of Kirchbichl and ended up completely stalling.
At the same time, the 52-year-old noticed the smell of fire and saw the first flames in the footwell area. “She immediately got out and made an emergency call. Shortly afterwards the car was full,” says police.
A12 had to be completely blocked
The vehicle fire was eventually brought under control by the alerted Kufstein fire brigade. The A12 had to be completely blocked towards travel into Innsbruck for the duration of the firefighting work until 7.35pm, after which the motorway could be cleared. The clean-up work continued until around 9:45 p.m.
Technical defect as the cause of the fire
According to the police, the fire may have been triggered by a technical defect in the engine compartment. Total damage occurred to the vehicle and fortunately no one was injured.
