Clearly medicate science: what is necessary

Date:

The Science Barometer shows: Austrians trust science. However, in terms of information and communication, this is a problem. Because we don’t feel well informed. What helps here: projects like “Fäkt!” That convey child and youth-friendly.

Research improves our lives and is reliable? Yes, the majority of Austrians say: according to the Science Barometer 2024, it is not the problem either. .

This also affects interest, which decreased slightly in 2024 compared to the previous year.

At least 60 percent of the population believes that information is good – as do 80 percent that scientists should inform the public about their work.

Science communication crucial
Heinz Faßmann, President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Öaw), on behalf of the annual Science Barometer requested by the Gallup Institute, wants to fight for people’s interest.

“People want more science communication,” he sees an order: “Science communication is crucial to make scientific knowledge understandable and accessible to everyone, to convey the value of evidence-based research and to strengthen the dialogue between science and society.”

“Fakt!” Videos do translation work
Such a mediation project with which the Öaw is already playing a pioneering role is “Fäkt!”: Crunchy, entertaining and exciting are the reels and videos for social media and Co. where scientific topics need to be conveyed.

“Fakt!” Moderator Marie-Sophie “Miso” and Julia “translate” science into trendy children’s and youth language.

They are topics that we would look at in the everyday life of everyday life: from the melting glacier to artificial intelligence, curse words and sleep research to mites and politics as a historical weapon. And even adults can learn a lot.
