Hours after the demonstration against the Graz Academic Ball, serious physical injuries occurred on Sunday evening. A 60-year-old baller was attacked by two unknown people.
As police announced on Monday, the incident took place around 3 p.m. The man from the Liezen District had just left the ball in the Graz Congress with his wife. At Andreas-Hofer-Platz there was the attack by the unknown male duo from behind.
Upper body injuries
The man fell over and suffered upper body injuries. It still needs to be clarified whether they are from the fall or the blows and kicks he received before.
After the attack, the perpetrators ran away. Three women who police said had been watched also fled. The daughter, alarmed by the victim’s wife, called for the rescue, the police were informed by a passer-by. The 60-year-old was taken to LKH Graz.
Two men and three women are suspected
An initial search by police officers from the nearby inspection Schmiedgasse was unsuccessful. It is determined due to serious bodily injury. Both the two men and the three women are suspected, whose role is still unclear.
The demo and the ball itself were in disarray despite the great rush. About 2,000 people had protested against the ball around two and a half hours from 5:30 PM, which they see as a “network meeting of German-national, right-wing extremists”, as the Styrian “offensive against the right” said. In the congressional lodges, they would “celebrate their racist, queer-hostile worldview.”
Connection to anti-ball demo unclear
Police cannot confirm a direct link between the demo and the nighttime attack due to the still poor information situation. “The investigation is still in its early stages,” spokesman Heimo Kohlbacher told the “Krone”. The rally and the time after their dissolution around 8 p.m., from the point of view of the police, went “more than calmly”.
Other than the victim’s shocked wife, there are no immediate witnesses for now, so there is no precise description of the perpetrator. Police are asking for information from the public, including the three women who may have been criminalized for failing to provide assistance.
