At least three refugees died off the Tunisian island of Djerba when their boat sank. Three other people are still missing. The Tunisian boat refugees wanted to cross the Mediterranean to Italy, the media reported.
The other eleven prisoners could have been rescued. The ship “Ocean Viking” of aid organization SOS Méditerrannée has brought more than 200 refugees to safety in the Mediterranean in just a few days. Last week there were 206 people, including 47 women and 79 unaccompanied minors. In May, the “Ocean Viking” had to wait a few days before being allowed to dock in Sicily with refugees on board.
refugee numbers are increasing
The number of boat people is increasing, according to the Italian Ministry of the Interior. While there were 19,794 in the same period the year before, this year there are already 26,652. The Italian government recently called for an efficient EU system to redistribute people. The European Union should actively build partnerships with third countries and help countries in difficulty to stem the ongoing influx.
