Heavy rain, sometimes severe hail and storms caused numerous fire brigade operations in Tyrol on Thursday evening – and enormous damage to local agriculture. The amount of damage known so far is well over 300,000 euros!
“The district of Innsbruck-Land was particularly affected by the hailstorms on Thursday. On an agricultural area of 1,200 hectares, there was a total damage in agriculture of 350,000 euros,” summarizes Norbert Jordan, regional director of the Austrian hail insurance company in Tyrol.
In some places, more than 40 liters of rain fell in 30 minutes, mainly damaging fruit and vegetable crops and grassland.
Already two million euros in damage this year
It was not the first storm this year to hit local farmers hard. “Total damage to agriculture in Tyrol is already almost two million euros this year. The rapid settlement of claims now has the highest priority,” continues Jordan. Affected farmers should ideally report their damage online via www.hagel.at.
Roadblocks after debris flows and landslides
Storms were deployed in areas such as Innsbruck, Zirl and Reith near Seefeld. The B171 Tiroler Straße between Zirl and the Eigenhofen district was blocked by rubble and mud and had to be closed. In Leithen, a district of Reith, the fields were as white as in winter from the heavy hail. There was also a landslide on Kössener Straße in the Unterland. This route was also closed.
In total, a total of 68 severe weather warnings were received by the Tyrol control center on Thursday evening between 6 pm and 11 pm.
