The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced that the situation around the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia has deteriorated. An explosion occurred in the immediate vicinity of the safety zone.
According to IAEA experts on the ground, the explosion was caused by a drone carrying an explosive charge, the organization said. “We are seeing yet another escalation of threats to nuclear safety at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant,” warned IAEA Director Rafael Grossi. He remains “extremely concerned” and calls on all parties to exercise restraint.
Damage reported in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant
According to IAEA observers, there has been heavy fighting in the area around the power plant over the past week. Despite calls for restraint, there are no signs of the fighting abating, the report said. Damage has been reported several times near the power plant in recent days.
The nuclear power plant, which Russia occupied as part of its invasion that began nearly two and a half years ago, has been the target of repeated attacks and acts of sabotage, with Moscow and Kiev blaming each other.
The IAEA had also warned of potential dangers to the nuclear plant there in light of the Ukrainian advance into Russia’s Kursk region that began on August 6. It remains unclear whether the Ukrainian advance is aimed at the Kursk nuclear plant.
Does Kiev have its sights set on the Kursk nuclear power plant?
Russia had already increased protection of the nuclear facility, which is located about 60 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. In addition, some of the workers building two new reactors were temporarily withdrawn from the plant.
Zelensky informed about further progress in the Kursk region after a meeting with the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Olexander Syrskyi. “The operation is going exactly as we expected. With the courage of Ukrainians, great things are being achieved. Now we are strengthening our positions,” Zelensky said.
Ukraine destroys Russian supply lines
The Ukrainian air force had earlier reported the destruction of a key road bridge. The structure on the Seim River in Glushkovo province lies in ruins; a key supply route for Russian troops has been destroyed.
“Ukrainian pilots carry out precision strikes on enemy strongholds, technology accumulations, and enemy logistics centers and supply routes,” said Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk.

According to Russian military bloggers from the Telegram channel “Rybar”, the bridge was first fired at by the American HIMARS rocket launcher and then destroyed by a glide bomb. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow criticized the use of weapons from NATO countries on Russian territory.
