In Vienna and Graz – protest against killing the Spanish greyhound

Date:

Bred to die: every year in Spain, thousands of Galgos (Spanish wind dogs) are “removed” or brutally killed in Spain. Animal rights activists require an end to this cruel practice throughout Europe. In Vienna and Graz takes place on Saturday, February 1, the “Galgo March”.

Hunting the name of tradition: it is an annual event in Spain, where Galgueros (hunting dog breeders) lets their fastest dogs compete against each other. Up to 70 kilometers per hour, the animals quickly chase on the open railing. Accompanied by cars and quads that race over the fields of Spain to follow the competition live. The owners of the fastest dog are granted and receive prize money.

The “Song of Death”
While the winner is being honored, the losers disappear without a track – a sports tradition that means a death sentence for most Galgos. At the end of the hunting season in February, the hunters arrange their dogs. About 50,000 dogs are affected annually – the number of non -reported cases should be much higher!

Hurry in honor of them, punishing and getting rid of their animals for the bad version in the so -man piano game: the animal is hung around their necks with a rope. The tips of the hinds just hit the floor, just like a pianist, the buttons touches. At some point the dog’s pain will end.

Politicians look at
Spain is the only country of the European Union in which hunting with the Greyhounds is allowed. Even more: according to a change in the National Animal Welfare Act, which was underwent in September 2023, Galgos and other hunting dogs in Spain are officially applicable as farm animals and are therefore excluded from animal welfare.

March for more attention
Animal welfare organizations throughout Europe protest against them and demand that hunting with Galgos in Spain. To abolish long -term traditions such as these, it is important to have a reconsideration of the population. This is possible with educational work and the pressure of the public. That is why the “Galgo March” in Vienna (the second time) and Graz (the first time) takes place on Saturday 1 February.
